A PAN card is a legal document. Under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, no person should have more than one PAN card. If this happens, a fine of ₹10,000 will be imposed. To avoid such mistakes, the card should be deactivated. There are two ways to surrender the card: online and offline.

How to surrender PAN card online?

Visit the NSDL website https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html

In the application type, select the option ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data’.

Fill all the details like category, name, mobile number and submit.

You will then receive a token number via email. Keep it safe for later use.

Click on Continue on the PAN application form.

Scan the documents. Enter your personal details and click Next.

Select the checkboxes for how many PAN cards you want to cancel and click Next.

Upload copy of date of birth, address proof, PAN card.

After completing all the procedures, you will receive a payment option. You can pay using your debit card, credit card, or net banking.

A successful payment slip will be generated.

Offline process for surrendering PAN card…

Get the application form from the nearest PAN card centre or download it from this website https://incometaxindia.gov.in/documents/form-for-changes-in-pan.pdf.

Fill in the details and enter the number of the PAN card to be surrendered.

Submit the date of birth, copy of address proof, surrendered PAN card and the form.

Upon submitting the form, you will be given a slip. Your card will be blocked within 10-15 days.

In the event of a person’s death, it is crucial to deactivate the PAN card for financial and other security reasons. Although surrendering the PAN card is not mandatory, failing to do so could lead to future problems.
