He was captaining India A against South Africa A on Saturday, November 8, ahead of the Test series against South Africa. The selectors have included him in the Indian team for the two-match Test series against South Africa on November 5. Pant retired hurt after being hit three times in the morning session of the third day’s play in the second innings of the ongoing second unofficial Test between India A and South Africa A.
In a video circulating online, Pant can be seen being hit first on the helmet, then on the left elbow, and then on the stomach. Pant was batting on 17 off 22 balls when he decided to retire. Dhruv Jurel came in to bat for the hosts after Pant’s departure. It will be interesting to see whether Pant returns to bat later in the current innings. If he doesn’t bat again and doesn’t return to the field, it could be a cause for concern for the Indian team management.
Pant is India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman in Tests. He was set to be included in India’s playing XI for the first Test of the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa in Kolkata next week.
