Australia captain Pat Cummins has hinted that he may miss the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne after Australia sealed the 2025-26 Ashes series in Adelaide. Cummins admitted that playing two consecutive Tests was already considered difficult despite his return, and that now that the series is already in Australia’s hands, there’s no need to take the risk.
Cummins took six wickets in the Adelaide Test, his first match in five and a half months. He had been battling a back injury for a long time. After the match, he said, “I’m feeling pretty good, but the rest of the series will have to wait. The Ashes were at stake, so we prepared aggressively and took risks. Now that we’ve won the series, we’ll reassess the situation.”
Australia captain Pat Cummins is not sure about the Boxing Day Test match vs England
He further clarified that playing in the Melbourne Test is not certain. Cummins said, “I don’t think I’ll play the Boxing Day Test. We’ll discuss the Sydney Test with the team. It was okay to take the risk while the series was still alive, but now it’s important to discuss it.”
England raised some hope on the final day of the Adelaide Test thanks to Jamie Smith and Will Jacks, but Australia had plenty of runs. Nathan Lyon’s hamstring injury during the match was a major blow for Australia, making his future participation unlikely. Despite this, the Australian bowlers maintained the pressure.
During the presentation, Cummins said, “This win is very special. We have been thinking about this series for a long time. Today was not easy, but the team got the job done. The atmosphere in the dressing room is great.”
Despite Nathan Lyon’s injury and his own initial misses, Cummins praised the team’s spirit. He said, “Something always happens. I missed the early games, so Steve Smith took over. Today, Lyon got injured, but the team said, ‘Okay, let’s see what happens next.’ That’s why we’ve been successful over the past few years.”
