Ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI) have added Sherfane Rutherford and Shardul Thakur to their squad. MI acquired both players via trade. Rutherford was traded to Gujarat Titans (GT) for ₹2.6 crore (26 million rupees) and Thakur was traded to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for ₹2 crore (20 million rupees). Let’s take a look at this news.
Mumbai Indians make double signing
Thakur played for LSG last season. He took nine wickets in 10 matches in IPL 2025 at an average of 28.84 and an economy rate of 11.02. He has played for six teams in the IPL so far, and MI will be his seventh. The right-arm bowler has taken a total of 107 wickets in the IPL so far.
In addition to GT, Rutherford has played for Delhi Capitals (DC) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL. Last season, he scored 291 runs in 13 matches at an average of 32.33 and a strike rate of 157.29. In his IPL career, he has played 23 matches, scoring 397 runs at an average of 24.81 and a strike rate of 137.37.

The left-handed batsman played 13 matches for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, scoring 291 runs at a strike rate of 157.29. The 27-year-old cricketer has previously represented Delhi Capitals (2019) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2022) in the IPL. He was part of the Mumbai Indians in 2020 and the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, but was not part of the playing XI that season.
Previously, a trade involving Shardul Thakur took place between the Mumbai Indians and the Lucknow Super Giants. Now, all-rounder Shardul Thakur will be seen in the Mumbai Indians jersey in IPL 2026. He was added to the Mumbai Indians team for a trade value of ₹2 crore. It should be noted that Shardul Thakur went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, and was subsequently signed by the Lucknow Super Giants as a replacement for ₹2 crore.
