Before him, South African legend Dale Steyn achieved this feat in the Ahmedabad Test on April 3, 2008, when he took five wickets for 23 runs in 8 overs. Ishant Sharma also took five wickets for 22 runs in 12 overs in the pink-ball Test in Kolkata on November 22, 2019, and Matt Henry (New Zealand) dismissed five Indian batsmen on the second day of the Bengaluru Test in October 2024, after the first day was abandoned due to rain.
Bumrah’s 16th five-wicket haul
This is Bumrah’s 16th five-wicket haul in his career. Only four Indian bowlers have taken more five-wicket hauls in Test cricket than him: Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, and Kapil Dev.
Bumrah’s dominance in India vs South Africa as well
Bumrah has also reached third place on the list of bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls in Test matches played between India and South Africa. He is surpassed only by Dale Steyn (5 times) and Ravichandran Ashwin (5 times). Bumrah has now taken four five-wicket hauls against South Africa in Test cricket, and this streak could extend.
