When Shastri was asked about Gambhir’s performance in a podcast interview, instead of offering any kind of defense, he bluntly stated, “I’m not protecting him. The coach also bears 100 percent responsibility. If this had happened during my time, I would have been the first to take responsibility. After that, I wouldn’t have spared the players in team meetings.” His statement is important because the performance of the batsmen has emerged as the biggest problem in India’s recent Test defeat.
Shastri furious over Test defeat against South Africa
Shastri also expressed his anger and harsh comments on India’s surprising batting performance in the Guwahati Test. India collapsed from 100/1 to 130/7 there, a collapse that led to the loss. Shastri said, “This team isn’t so bad that such a sudden decline would occur. The players must understand their responsibility. These are the same batsmen who have been playing spin since childhood, so why this problem?”
His statement made it clear that the issue is not just about coaching, but also about the mentality and shot selection of the players.
