Big news has emerged regarding the Indian women’s hockey team. Citing personal reasons, the team’s head coach, Harendra Singh, has resigned from his post with immediate effect. Now, the hockey federation of India have to find a suitable replacement of head. India is scheduled to play multiple crucial tournaments in upcoming days. Before that, the governing body have to appoint a new head coach.
Who will be the next coach of team India?
It is now believed that Dutch veteran Sjoerd Marijne may replace Harendra Singh as the next head coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. Sources also say that in a sudden development, Harendra Singh has sent an email to Hockey India informing them that he is resigning with immediate effect. He also stated that this is a purely personal decision.
Marin may return as coach of the Indian women’s hockey team. During his tenure, the Indian women’s team achieved a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics. Marin resigned as head coach in August 2021. Harendra Singh assumed the role in April 2024. He previously coached the 2016 World Cup-winning junior men’s hockey team in Lucknow.
Harendra Singh, while resigning, said, “It has been a privilege to coach the Indian women’s hockey team. It has been the most special moment of my career. Although personal reasons have forced me to step away, my heart is with this wonderful team and their success. I will always cherish my journey with Hockey India and will continue to support their efforts to take Indian hockey to the highest levels of success.”
Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey extended his best wishes to Harendra Singh, saying, “We thank Harendra Singh for his service and his remarkable experience. His commitment to the development of Indian hockey is renowned worldwide. We will announce his suitable replacement soon and wish him all the best.”
