Crispy Onion Pakoras Making Tips – It’s wintertime, there’s a cold breeze outside, and you have a steaming cup of tea in your hand… and if you could have some crispy onion fritters to go with it, that would be perfect! Almost everyone loves the spicy taste of onion fritters. But as soon as fritters are mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is—too much oil.
People often think that fritters only become crispy when they are deep-fried. If you also think this, then today your misconception is going to be cleared. In fact, renowned chef Neha Deepak Shah has shared a recipe for onion fritters on her Instagram account that makes them perfectly crispy with just 1 tablespoon of oil.
So, let’s learn this easy and healthy recipe step-by-step.
Ingredients for Healthy Onion Fritters
To make crispy onion fritters with less oil, you will need:
2 large onions (thinly sliced)
1/3 cup grated carrots (optional)
2 tablespoons fresh coriander (finely chopped)
2 green chilies (finely chopped)
3/4 cup gram flour (besan)
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon red chili powder
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons water
A pinch of carom seeds (ajwain) (optional)
The Right Way to Make Onion Fritters with Less Oil
Onion fritters usually absorb a lot of oil. In such a case, using an air fryer instead of deep frying is a smart and healthy option. This way, you can make a full plate of fritters without using too much oil.
Step 1: Prepare the Batter
In a large bowl, combine the sliced onions, carrots, coriander, green chilies, turmeric, red chili powder, salt, and gram flour.
Now add a very small amount of water to make a thick batter. Make sure the batter is not too thin, otherwise the fritters will not be crispy.
Step 2: First Air Fry Without Oil
Preheat the air fryer and air fry the fritters without any oil for about 3 minutes. Step 3: Apply a little oil
After 3 minutes, take the pakoras out and brush them lightly with a little oil (about 1 teaspoon).
Step 4: Air fry again
Now air fry the pakoras again for 5 minutes.
Then flip the pakoras and cook for another 3–4 minutes on the other side.
Why is this method special?
The pakoras will be perfectly crispy and golden. Very little oil will be used, so they will be light and healthy. They will taste just as good as deep-fried pakoras. Serve these onion pakoras made using this method with tea and double the enjoyment of winter. Try it once, and believe me — you won’t even miss deep-fried pakoras!
