New Delhi: The has stayed the rules framed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent discrimination based on caste, religion, and disability in higher education institutions and to promote equality. Upper-caste groups across the country were protesting against these new UGC rules.

A petition challenging these rules was filed in the Supreme Court. The petition was heard on January 29, 2026. The hearing was conducted by a bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant, who, considering the seriousness of the matter and other factors, stayed the implementation of the new UGC rules.
