New Delhi: For the past several days, the ED raid on the I-PAC headquarters in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s subsequent appearance at the scene have been making headlines. The Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has suffered a major setback from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has completely stayed the FIR registered against the ED.

Following the court’s order, it is clear that the West Bengal police will now be unable to arrest ED officers. A notice has also been issued staying the proceedings until the next hearing. The court has also sought a response from the West Bengal government, giving them two weeks to reply. The court deemed interference in the agency’s investigation illegal.

Earlier, during the ED raid on the I-PAC headquarters in Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself arrived and took some documents. The Chief Minister held Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the action, calling it a conspiracy to steal data.

FIR to remain stayed until the next hearing

Supreme Court Justice P.K. Mishra, while hearing the petition, delivered a blow to the West Bengal government. The FIR registered against the ED officials will remain completely stayed until the next hearing of the petition. The Supreme Court directed the respondents to preserve the CCTV footage and other storage devices containing recordings of the search.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi requested that the investigation proceed without any pressure and sought additional time to apply if the stay continues.

The court responded that the order could have been passed earlier, but given the detailed arguments and the fact that the proceedings were being widely telecast, it was important to record all the arguments in detail.
