Maharashtra Election Results 2026 – In the Maharashtra municipal elections, the BJP alliance achieved what political pundits hadn’t even predicted. For the first time in 45 years, the BJP has completely wiped out the opposition in the elections held for 29 municipal corporations, including the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation).
The BJP is leading in 23 out of the 29 municipal corporations in the state. The BJP has a massive lead in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Nashik. For the first time, the BJP has established complete control over Mumbai. The faces of BJP workers are beaming with excitement as the party has emerged as the single largest party in the BMC for the first time in its 45-year history.

Out of the 227 seats in the BMC, the BJP appears to be winning 118 seats, which is 4 more than the magic number for a majority. Now the question arises as to which leader the BJP will choose as the Mayor of the BMC. Many such questions are arising in people’s minds. For the first time in the history of the BMC, a BJP mayor will occupy the mayor’s chair.
How is the Mayor elected?
The BMC Mayor is considered very powerful and holds certain special privileges. Therefore, the competition for this post is quite intense. A total of 227 corporators are elected from different wards in the BMC. They are also called Nagar Sevaks or Corporators in Mumbai. The party that has the majority chooses its own Mayor.
The corporators who win the municipal corporation elections are the ones who elect the Mayor. Importantly, the Mayor’s term is 2.5 years. Corporators are elected for a 5-year term. After one Mayor’s term is complete, another Mayor is elected.

There are a total of 227 seats in the BMC. The majority mark to elect a Mayor is 114. According to the current trends, the BJP is leading or has won 90 seats, and Shinde’s Shiv Sena is leading or has won 28 seats. In total, the Mahayuti alliance appears to be winning 118 seats.
Seeing the majority, there is a great atmosphere of enthusiasm in the BJP camp. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena is leading or has won on 63 seats. The Congress is ahead on 12 seats, while MNS candidates are leading on 6 seats. Ajit Pawar’s NCP is leading in one seat, and candidates from other parties are leading in 9 seats. The BJP can easily elect its own mayor in Mumbai.
