Delete Duplicate Voter ID Online – In India, a voter ID card is not just an identity document, but also a symbol of a citizen’s democratic right. However, many people mistakenly apply for a new voter ID after changing their address, which can result in two voter ID cards being issued for the same person.
This is not something to ignore. Holding two voter ID cards is a punishable offence under the Representation of the People Act, 1950. A person’s name cannot appear in two different constituencies or at two different locations within the same constituency. Doing so constitutes electoral fraud and can result in legal consequences, including fines and even imprisonment.
The good news is that you can now delete your duplicate voter ID online from home. The Election Commission has digitised the entire process, making it easier for citizens to correct such mistakes.
Penalty for Holding Two Voter ID Cards
Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, clearly states that intentionally or accidentally having two voter IDs—or using both—is a legal offence. The punishment may include up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of ₹1000, or both.
If someone uses both cards to cast votes, it may be classified as fraudulent voting and could result in strict action, including cancellation of voter registration. Therefore, if you discover you have two voter IDs, delete the duplicate immediately.
How to Delete a Duplicate Voter ID Online?
The Election Commission now allows voters to delete duplicate entries through the NVSP portal. The process takes only a few minutes.
To begin, visit the official NVSP website. If you do not already have an account, you can sign up using your mobile number or email ID.
On the homepage, select “Deletion or Objection in Electoral Roll” and open Form 7. In the reason section, mention “Duplicate Voter ID issued mistakenly.”
Upload a scanned copy of your voter ID, along with your Aadhaar or another identity proof.
After submitting the form, you will receive an acknowledgement number that you can use to track the status of your request.
A Booth Level Officer (BLO) will verify your application, and once the verification is complete, the duplicate voter ID entry will be removed from the records.
