Consequently, the state is now poised to have a BJP Chief Minister for the very first time. The BJP won over two-thirds of the seats—totalling 206—while the TMC was restricted to just 81 seats. This marks the TMC’s worst electoral performance to date.

🔮 Who will be West Bengal’s next Chief Minister?
Five names are being actively discussed. BJP may also appoint its first female CM outside Delhi, given its women’s safety campaign plank.
With the BJP securing a majority, speculation has already begun regarding who will be West Bengal’s next Chief Minister. During the election campaign, Home Minister Amit Shah had already stated that the Chief Minister would be chosen from within Bengal itself. Several prominent names are currently being floated as contenders in the race, and an official announcement regarding the selection is expected shortly.
Will West Bengal Get a Female Chief Minister?
During the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) placed women’s safety at the forefront of its agenda. Given this emphasis, there is growing speculation that the party might field a woman as its Chief Ministerial candidate. The BJP has been particularly aggressive in its criticism of the opposition regarding the issue of women’s reservation.
Currently, except for Delhi, the party does not have a female Chief Minister in any state. Therefore, to further bolster its offensive against the opposition, the BJP could potentially appoint a woman as the Chief Minister of Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari: A Strong Contender
Suvendu Adhikari’s name is also being cited as a frontrunner in the race for the Chief Minister’s post. There was a time when Suvendu Adhikari was considered a very close confidant of Mamata Banerjee, having even served as the TMC’s chief strategist. In 2021, he earned the title of “Giant Killer” after defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. This time around, he once again defeated the incumbent Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, in Bhabanipur. Furthermore, by securing a victory in Nandigram as well, he successfully planted the saffron flag across two Assembly constituencies.
Samik Bhattacharya’s Name Also in the Mix
Samik Bhattacharya, the President of the West Bengal BJP, is widely regarded within the party as a leader who possesses the ability to take everyone along with him. He has played a pivotal role in the BJP’s expansion in the state by working diligently behind the scenes. Consequently, there is a possibility that the BJP could entrust him with the Chief Minister’s chair in Bengal.
Agnimitra Paul Also Under Consideration
Agnimitra Paul—one of the BJP’s prominent female leaders—is another name currently being discussed as a potential contender in the race for the Chief Minister’s post. She has also retained her Asansol South seat in this election. If the BJP decides to appoint a female Chief Minister in the state, Agnimitra could be their choice.
A Decision May Be Taken Regarding Roopa Ganguly
Former Rajya Sabha MP and MLA from Sonarpur South, Roopa Ganguly, has done significant work at the grassroots level in her capacity as the President of the Mahila Morcha. Given her popularity, the BJP may also consider appointing her as the Chief Minister of Bengal.
