Bulldozer action took place last night near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque in Delhi’s Turkman Gate area. The police administration claims that the action was taken to demolish illegal constructions around the mosque, and more than 30 bulldozers were deployed at the site. This bulldozer operation has been ongoing since Tuesday night. This action followed an order from the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. โ€‹โ€‹Stone-pelting was also reported against the police during the anti-encroachment drive near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque. In response, the police fired tear gas shells. The area has been completely transformed into a fortified zone since midnight.

Tear Gas Fired

Police reported that residents protested during the bulldozer operation. Reports of stone-pelting and the firing of tear gas shells by the police have also emerged. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

The clashes occurred when Delhi Municipal Corporation officials, following a Delhi High Court order, were conducting an anti-encroachment drive in the area adjacent to the Syed Faiz Ilahi Mosque and the cemetery near Turkman Gate. During the drive, some people allegedly started pelting stones, causing chaos at the site.

According to the police, extensive law-and-order arrangements were already in place, and senior officers were deployed across several areas. Coordination meetings were also held with members of local peace committees. The police stated in a press release that the situation is now normal. However, the Turkman Gate area remains heavily fortified. A tense situation prevailed in the area early Wednesday morning following the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) demolition drive, during which approximately 300 municipal officials and employees were carrying out demolition work on land adjacent to a mosque and a cemetery at Turkman Gate. Residents protested the removal of the alleged illegal structures and reportedly threw stones. The situation was later brought under control with the use of tear gas.

What is the current situation?

Security has been significantly increased in the area around the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque near Turkman Gate. The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against unknown persons in connection with the stone-pelting incident. The stone-throwers are being identified using CCTV footage and body-camera recordings.

Bulldozers rolled despite the court notice.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court issued a notice on a petition filed by the managing committee of the Masjid Syed Ilahi, challenging the Delhi Municipal Corporation’s decision to remove alleged encroachments from land adjacent to the mosque and cemetery at Ramlila Maidan. Despite the notice being issued, the demolition drive continued. The encroachments included a portion of the road, a footpath, a community hall, a parking area, and a private diagnostic center.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Madhur Verma stated that some people tried to obstruct the drive by throwing stones. He said, “The situation was immediately brought under control, and appropriate force was used.”
