Parliament’s Winter Session Begins Today, Opposition Likely to Disrupt Over SIR Issue

New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament begins today, Monday. The first day of the Winter Session is expected to be quite uproarious, as the opposition may corner the government on the issue of SIR. Furthermore, the Congress is reportedly angry over the FIR against former Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in the National Herald case.

This session could also prove to be very important for the general public and businesses. The Modi government may also introduce 14 new bills. The government may move forward with preparations to reform the infrastructure. The Winter Session will last 19 days, meaning December 19th will be the last day of this session. Leaders of all political parties are likely to raise their respective issues prominently.

Possibility of uproar over SIR

The first day of the Lok Sabha is expected to be quite uproarious regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) in 12 states and union territories. Members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from opposition parties may create uproar. The opposition parties have also made plans to corner the government on the SIR issue.

Additionally, the issue of suicide attacks in Delhi and the poor quality of air pollution in Delhi-NCR is also likely to be raised prominently in Parliament. Meanwhile, the government is preparing to advance its reform agenda through 14 bills this session, including opening up the civilian nuclear sector to private companies.

The government stated that Parliamentary proceedings should proceed smoothly. It will continue discussions with opposition parties to avoid deadlocks. The first batch of supplementary demands for grants will also be presented, discussed, and voted upon during the winter session.

There is considerable buzz surrounding the first day of the Parliament session. Opposition parties, including the Congress, the second-largest party in the House, are expected to attack the BJP government on several issues. However, the central government’s primary focus is on the proposed discussion on the 150th anniversary of the national song, Vande Mataram. The government wants to discuss this song in Parliament. Narendra Modi raised this issue a few days ago, accusing the Congress of removing certain lines in 1937.
