Veg Thali Cheaper, Non-Veg Thali Price Falls 3%

Veg and Non Veg Thali Pricing: In February, the cost of home-cooked Veg Thali (vegetarian thali) remained unchanged compared to the previous year. In contrast, the price of Non Veg (non-vegetarian thali) saw a decrease of 3 percent. This information was revealed in the ‘Roti Chawal Rate’ report by CRISIL Intelligence. The report indicates that even though the prices of potatoes, onions, and pulses dropped in February, the price of Veg Thali stayed the same. However, there has been a significant rise in tomato prices.

According to the Crisil report, tomato prices have surged by 43 percent year-on-year, reaching Rs 33 per kg in February. This is an increase from Rs 23 per kg in February 2025. From November 2025 to January 2026, the market saw a 32 percent annual decline in tomato arrivals, which has affected supply due to reduced production.

Potato and onion prices have decreased

The conclusion of the Kharif season led to a rise in onion arrivals, causing onion prices to drop by 24 percent year-on-year. Onions have a short shelf life, and since they couldn’t be exported, they were sold in local markets. Similarly, potato prices fell by 13 percent year-on-year, with sales continuing from cold storage stocks from the previous Rabi season.

Pulse prices have also decreased

This fiscal year, pulse prices have dropped by 9% year-on-year, attributed to higher initial stocks. The stocks of pigeon peas are estimated to be 20% higher for the July-June marketing year. The report mentions that the average cost of preparing a thali at home is based on the current raw material prices across North, South, East, and West India. Vegetable oil prices have increased by 4% year-on-year due to a global shortage of soybean oil. However, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices have risen by 6% year-on-year, which has affected the overall cost of meals.

Non-veg thali becomes cheaper

The price of the non-veg thali has declined. This is due to a 7% year-on-year decline in broiler prices. Broiler chicken constitutes 50% of the non-veg thali. The non-veg thali has more ingredients than the veg thali, but chicken (broiler) replaces lentils. The price of the non-veg thali has declined less due to the high cost of tomatoes. However, month-on-month, the price of veg and non-veg thali declined by 5% and 1% respectively in February.
