The Railways have made a groundbreaking change to ease the travel of millions of passengers, especially senior citizens, women over 45, and pregnant passengers. Previously, forgetting to select a lower berth when booking a ticket could result in a difficult journey. Now, the Railways’ system has become so intelligent that if you fall into these special categories, the lower berth will automatically be reserved for you if a seat becomes vacant. This will not only increase comfort but also eliminate the hassle of frequently changing seats during the journey.
Why will senior citizens receive lower berths

The Railways has given top priority to three categories of passengers for this new facility. The first category includes senior citizens, for whom climbing to the upper berths is often challenging. The second category includes women over 45, who find the lower berths more convenient during long journeys.
The third category is for pregnant women, who find it extremely difficult to reach the middle or upper berths. The new reservation system will automatically allocate lower berths to these three categories upon booking a ticket. If a lower berth is not available at the time of booking, the TTE on the train will prioritize allocating them an empty lower berth.

Lower berths are reserved in different coaches
According to the Railway Ministry, a certain number of lower berths are pre-reserved in each coach. In sleeper coaches, approximately six to seven lower berths are reserved exclusively for this category. In Third AC, four to five lower berths are reserved, and in Second AC, three to four lower berths are reserved separately. These seats are prioritized only for senior citizens, women over 45, and pregnant passengers. This simply means that the system considers their needs first and then accommodates other passengers.

Special Arrangements for Disabled Passengers
The Railways already maintains a separate quota for disabled passengers, and this has now been further clarified. A total of four seats are reserved for this class in Sleeper and Third AC, including two lower berths. Four seats are also reserved for these passengers in 2S and Chair Car. A co-passenger attendant is also provided with a seat to ensure a hassle-free journey. When lower berths are available on the train, they are first allocated to senior citizens, disabled passengers, and pregnant women.
