Railway New Rules from March 1, 5 Biggest Changes in Train Travel

Railway Rules March: If you often travel by train, this information is very significant for you. Starting March 1, 2026, Indian Railways will implement some groundbreaking changes to its ticketing system and travel regulations. If you frequently travel by train, it’s essential to be aware of these updates to avoid any issues at the station. Here’s a detailed overview of the key changes that will take effect on March 1:

What railway rules are changing from March 1?

The UTS app will be discontinued

The most significant change pertains to unreserved (general) and platform tickets. Beginning March 1, the old UTS on Mobile app will be entirely shut down. For general tickets, platform tickets, and monthly season tickets (MST), you will need to utilize the RailOne app. This super app will not only allow you to book general tickets but will also provide features like reservations, live train status, and location all in one place.

Aadhaar will be mandatory for ticket booking

To combat the black marketing of railway tickets, regulations have been further tightened. Aadhaar verification will now be required for booking tickets through IRCTC or the RailOne app. Additionally, ticket booking by agents will be banned within the first 30 minutes of booking to ensure that regular passengers can secure confirmed tickets first.

Stricter Waiting List Rules

Due to congestion and safety issues, the Railways has tightened the rules for waiting list ticket holders. Now, only passengers with confirmed or RAC tickets will be allowed to board sleeper and all AC coaches. If your ticket remains on the Waiting List (WL) even after the chart preparation, you will not be permitted to travel in that reserved coach. Such passengers will no longer be allowed to board the coach.

Heavy Luggage Fines

Carrying heavy luggage on trains can now become quite expensive. If you are found with more than the class-wise limit, you will face a fine that is six times the normal rate. The Railways has become stricter regarding luggage restrictions.

Changing travel dates will be easier

Another good news is that it’s now easier to change travel dates on confirmed tickets. Passengers will be able to change their confirmed tickets online. There will be no additional cancellation or service charges. However, only the difference in fare will be payable. This facility will depend on seat availability.

Change of boarding point

Passengers will now be able to change their train’s boarding point, even after chart preparation, until the next chart is prepared. Previously, this facility was only available until the first chart was prepared.

What to do before traveling?

  1. Download the RailOne app on your mobile and link it to your Aadhaar.
  2. Avoid carrying heavy luggage or pay for it in advance.
  3. Only enter reserved coaches with a confirmed or RAC ticket.
