Many central government schemes are designed to directly address people’s financial needs. The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana, launched on September 17, 2023, is one such unique scheme, aiming to empower artisans and workers engaged in traditional occupations with self-reliance. Millions of people have joined this scheme, but many are still unclear about who benefits from it, who is eligible, and who is not. Let’s understand who can apply under this scheme.

These 18 types of workers are eligible for benefits

The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana is specifically for those engaged in traditional occupations. This includes cobblers or shoemakers, stone carvers, fishing net makers, hammer and toolkit makers, locksmiths, washermen, and tailors. Additionally, garland makers, masons, basket, mat, and broom makers, doll and toy makers, barbers, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, boat makers, and sculptors are also eligible for this scheme. These are 18 traditional occupations, and individuals engaged in these occupations can receive training and financial assistance under this scheme.

Who is not eligible for this scheme

Like every scheme, the PM Vishwakarma Yojana also has certain conditions. Those in government employment or working in a government department, public sector undertaking, or local body are ineligible. Additionally, individuals who pay taxes are also excluded from this scheme. Another important requirement is age. Even if a person is engaged in any of these 18 traditional occupations, if they are under 18 years of age, they cannot apply for this scheme. Eligibility is only considered after they have attained the age of 18.

Benefits and Loan Facility Under the Scheme

Beneficiaries registered under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana are initially provided advanced training to further enhance their skills. A stipend of ₹500 per day is provided during the training period. Additionally, an amount of ₹15,000 is provided to purchase a toolkit. The most important feature of this scheme is the loan facility at an affordable interest rate.

In the first phase, a loan of ₹1 lakh is provided for 18 months. After repaying this loan, beneficiaries can avail a second loan of up to ₹2 lakh, which must be repaid within 30 months. This scheme is proving to be a major support for small artisans.
