PM Surya Ghar Scheme: With electricity prices on the rise, the need for energy security and clean energy has become more pressing. The central government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is proving to be a transformative initiative for millions of families across the nation.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this ambitious program goes beyond just providing subsidies; it represents a significant move towards achieving energy self-sufficiency in India. The scheme’s goal is to equip one crore homes with rooftop solar systems, thereby lowering electricity bills and encouraging green energy production at the household level.
Through this initiative, the central government offers financial support for the installation of solar panels on rooftops. This enables families to produce their own electricity and enjoy financial benefits by feeding surplus energy back into the grid. The government asserts that this could bring electricity costs for countless families down to nearly zero. Importantly, the deadline to take advantage of this scheme is March 2027. Thus, for families facing high monthly electricity bills, this program could be an excellent choice for long-term savings. Learn more about the PM Surya Ghar Scheme.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is designed to connect individuals with clean energy while lowering electricity expenses. Under this initiative, solar panels are installed on residential rooftops. The electricity produced can be utilized for everyday household activities. If there is any surplus electricity, it can be sent back to the grid and offset against the electricity bill.
The government is providing subsidies and accessible loans
As part of the scheme, the government offers subsidies for the installation of solar systems. Officials indicate that the cost of setting up a solar plant can range from Rs 80,000 to Rs 2 lakh. Furthermore, individuals are also presented with the option of easy installment loans. Reports suggest that loans of up to Rs 2 lakh can be made available at an interest rate of around 7%.
How is this scheme helpful in extreme heat?
As the heat increases, electricity consumption increases rapidly. Due to continuous running of AC and cooler, the electricity bill reaches thousands of rupees. Sometimes power cuts also occur due to overload. In such a situation, rooftop solar system can help in many ways. With this, the electricity required for the house during the day can be generated. Electricity bill can be reduced to a great extent. Apart from this, relief is also provided in case of long power cuts. There is less damage to the environment also. A 3 kilowatt solar system can fulfill the major needs of an average family.
How much subsidy is available?
If someone installs solar panels without subsidy, the cost per kilowatt is approximately 60,000 to 80,000 rupees. However, under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the government provides 40 to 60 percent of this cost as a subsidy.
Subsidy of up to Rs 30,000 on 1kW system
Subsidy up to Rs 60,000 on 2kW system
Maximum subsidy of Rs 78,000 on systems of 3kW or larger
This means that the central subsidy will not exceed Rs 78,000. However, some state governments are also providing additional subsidies. For example, in Uttar Pradesh, in addition to the central government’s assistance, an additional subsidy of approximately Rs 30,000 is being provided. Consequently, consumers there could receive a total relief of approximately Rs 1.08 lakh.
