PM Kisan Scheme: Are Sharecroppers Eligible? Check The Rules

PM Kisan Yojana: Millions of people await the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. To benefit small farmers who bear the burden of irrigation, seeds, and other costs, the government provides the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi three times a year in installments of 2,000 each.

However, questions persist as to whether farmers who work as sharecroppers also receive the PM-KISAN scheme. The most important condition of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme relates to land ownership. The government identifies beneficiaries based on revenue records, i.e., the farmer whose name owns cultivable land.

What is PM Kisan Yojana?

The livelihoods of millions of families in the country depend on agriculture. A large number of these farmers are small-scale farmers or earn their living by working as sharecroppers on others’ land. Amidst limited income and rising expenses, government schemes provide significant relief to these families. One such scheme is the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, under which eligible farmers are provided financial assistance annually. Under the scheme, Rs 6,000 is transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts in three equal installments. 21 installments of PM Kisan have been released so far, benefiting millions of farmers.

Who benefits from PM Kisan?

Land ownership is crucial to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. The government identifies PM Kisan beneficiaries based on this land revenue record. Only those who own agricultural land are eligible for this scheme. If a farmer cultivates on a sharecropping basis and the land is not in his or her name, he or she will not be eligible for the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi benefits under current regulations. Unless the land is owned, the scheme does not apply.

What benefits does the sharecropper get under PM Kisan?

Thousands of farmers in villages cultivate land owned by others. In return, they share their crops with the landowner. These farmers are called sharecroppers or bataiyas. They are the ones who cultivate the land, but the land remains in the owner’s name. Sharecroppers are not eligible for the PM Kisan Yojana. If a sharecropper owns even a small piece of land, they can benefit from the scheme based on their own land. However, landless farmers are not included in this scheme.
