FASTag technology was designed to streamline toll crossings and minimize traffic congestion. It allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas smoothly, eliminating long queues. However, there are instances when a vehicle owner may want to know the toll routes taken by their vehicle, which could belong to anyone, like a family member. In some cases, individuals might consider installing a second FASTag to keep their travels a secret from relatives. This raises the question: can you have multiple FASTags on one vehicle?

Multiple FASTags for One Vehicle

Previously, it was permissible to have several FASTags linked to a single vehicle, allowing users to connect tags from different banks.

One Vehicle, One FASTag

However, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has since revised this policy. The current rule mandates that each vehicle can only have one FASTag associated with it. This change was implemented to reduce confusion among users and toll operators, as having multiple FASTags created complications.

What If You Have Multiple FASTags?

If your vehicle has more than one FASTag linked, the system will recognize the most recently used FASTag as active. This means that only the latest FASTag will be considered for transactions.

New Rule

Under the new regulations, if a FASTag remains inactive for over 60 minutes before the vehicle reaches the toll and stays inactive for 10 minutes after passing through, the transaction will be declined. In such cases, the system will display “Error Code 176” to indicate the payment issue.
