What is PhonePe Protect?
PhonePe Protect is an advanced secure payment feature that protects you from online fraud. This system uses data linked to government databases to determine the reliability of a mobile number. If the number has been involved in any financial fraud, the app blocks the payment or displays a warning.
How does this feature work?
PhonePe has started using the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) data. FRI is a government tool that monitors mobile numbers that have been involved in financial fraud. As soon as you are about to make a payment, the system immediately checks the number and displays an alert on the screen if a risk is detected.
Alerts based on risk level
Under this feature, numbers are categorized into different risk categories. If a number is listed as Very High Risk in government records, PhonePe will block money transfers to that number and provide a reason. However, if the number falls under the Medium Risk category, the user will be shown a warning, leaving the user with the decision to send money.
