LPG Rule Change: The beginning of every month typically brings with it some significant changes. This time, too, June 1st has ushered in amendments to several major regulations. Moreover, due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the supply chain for LPG and PNG in India has faced disruptions. To address this crisis, the government has already taken several substantial measures.
Now, effective June 1, 2026, a new rule regarding LPG is being implemented, aimed at ensuring a continued and adequate supply of cylinders for domestic consumption. Efforts are currently underway across the country to expand the network of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections. Despite this expansion, however, the usage of LPG has not declined.

The Government Cracks Down
The Central Government has now resolved to eliminate dual gas connections. Starting from the first of the month, a 30-day deadline has been established for consumers who hold a PNG connection; if the LPG cylinder is not surrendered within this stipulated timeframe, the connection will be cancelled. Amidst the shortage of LPG, the government has prioritized the expansion of PNG connections, and the number of such connections continues to rise.
Meanwhile, by March, 6.5 lakh (650,000) new PNG connections had been distributed. Yet, despite this, the consumption of LPG cylinders has not decreased. This clearly indicates that many households have acquired a new PNG connection without surrendering their existing LPG connection—even though the government had explicitly stated that if a household holds both a PNG and an LPG connection, the LPG connection must be surrendered. Despite these directives, people are still failing to surrender them.
One-Month Deadline: Surrender or Face Cancellation
In light of this persistent issue, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has now introduced a major regulatory change. The objective is to gradually phase out dual-fuel connections in areas where the gas grid is operational—that is, where PNG connections are available.
Following recent amendments to the LPG Regulation Order, a mandatory 30-day timeline has now been established for consumers who obtain a PNG connection to surrender their LPG connection. Effective June 1, 2026, families will be required to officially terminate and surrender their existing LPG cylinder connections within 30 days of their PNG connection becoming active.
