Indian Railways: Indian Railways is broadening its operations and stepping into a new age of high-speed trains. The Railways is consistently innovating new technologies and modern trains to ensure passengers enjoy fast, safe, and comfortable journeys. In addition, Indian Railways has recently received the green light for a new generation of trains that can reach speeds of up to 220 km per hour, surpassing the current Vande Bharat trains. As a result, the citizens of India will soon have access to these new trains.

The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned the development of two new trainsets, designed to operate at a speed of 220 km/h. The existing Vande Bharat trains operate at 180 km/h. Indian Railways is set to launch trains that will exceed the speeds of the Vande Bharat. At present, there are 81 pairs of Vande Bharat chair car trains running throughout the nation, but the upcoming trains will enhance this system, making it faster and more contemporary.

New 16 coach trainset

On March 23, 2026, the Railway Board approved the addition of two 16-coach trainsets as part of the 2027-28 coach production initiative. These trains will operate on broad gauge tracks and will be equipped with steel-bodied coaches. Their maximum operational speed will be 200 km/h, ensuring a quick and smooth travel experience for passengers.

In October 2024, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai awarded BEML the contract to design and produce two high-speed trainsets. Each trainset will comprise eight coaches, with the cost per coach set at Rs 27.86 crore. The overall project cost is estimated to be around Rs 866.87 crore, which includes design and infrastructure expenses. India boasts three primary train and coach manufacturing hubs: the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, and the Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli. Here, Vande Bharat, Metro, Amrit Bharat, and other modern trains are produced.

Along with new trains, the railways is also improving its track system. To improve track quality, the railways have now decided to adopt composite sleepers, which are lighter and more durable than traditional iron and concrete sleepers. These sleepers can support greater weight and make travel more comfortable, especially on bridges and crossings.

AI technology will increase security

The railways also plan to use artificial intelligence to monitor tracks. To do this, modern equipment like ground penetration radar will be installed, which will help assess the internal condition of the tracks. Furthermore, magnetic particle testing will be used to check the quality of welding, allowing even the smallest defects to be detected in time.
