Often, when we fill up petrol or diesel, a question definitely comes to our mind: how much profit does the petrol pump owner make? Ordinary people think that there must be a huge profit per liter, but the real figures tell a very different story.

The figures reveal the real truth
According to the data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, petrol pump owners are given a fixed commission per kiloliter of petrol. One kiloliter contains 1000 liters. According to the current data, this commission on petrol is fixed at approximately Rs 3144 per kiloliter. This means that the pump owner earns about Rs 3.14 per liter of petrol. In addition, a fixed percentage is added separately to the billable value.

How much commission is received on diesel?
When it comes to diesel, the commission is less compared to petrol. According to the data, a pump owner receives a commission of approximately βΉ1389 per kiloliter of diesel. This translates to a profit of about βΉ1.38 per liter. Additionally, a small percentage of the billable value is also included as an extra.

The reality: Expenses outweigh the earnings

While this commission per liter sounds decent, running a petrol pump involves significant expenses. After accounting for employee salaries, electricity bills, maintenance, transportation, and other costs, the actual profit is quite limited. This is why, although the petrol pump business appears large, the profit margins are no longer as high as they once were.
