How to get compensation?

According to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulations, if hallmarked jewelry sold to a consumer is found to be inferior in purity, they are entitled to compensation, which is twice the value of the difference in the purity of the jewelry. For example, if you purchased hallmarked gold of 22 carats (91.6%), but it was found to be 20 carats (83.3%) upon testing, you will receive compensation equal to twice the value of the difference in purity (91.6% – 83.3%).

How to detect fraud?

Consumers can have their gold jewelry tested at any BIS-accredited testing and hallmarking center. The testing center will provide a report indicating the actual carat weight of the gold. If the test reveals low purity, consumers can complain to the National Consumer Helpline along with the BIS Care App.
