FASTag rules: Nowadays, the majority of people travelling on highways utilise FASTag. This not only saves people’s time but also facilitates quick payment processing. However, it often happens that despite having a sufficient balance in their account, a FASTag fails to scan, causing travelers to face significant inconvenience. The NHAI has issued an advisory regarding this matter.
According to the NHAI, the root of the problem does not always lie with the toll system itself, but rather with the FASTag becoming defective or outdated. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) states that defective or worn-out FASTags hinder proper scanning, leading to delays at toll plazas and the formation of long queues. In such situations, travelers often find themselves stuck in traffic jams.

The National Highways Authority of India has advised the public that if their FASTag repeatedly fails to scan, they should inspect it immediately and replace it if necessary. Some people tend to assume that the scanning equipment at the toll plaza is malfunctioning; however, this is rarely the case. In reality, the RFID chip embedded in the FASTag may cease to function effectively after a certain period.
Why Do FASTags Become Defective?
The primary reason is that frequent cleaning of the vehicle’s windshield can cause the device to stop working. If the windshield is scrubbed too vigorously, the electronic chip embedded in the FASTag can be damaged. Furthermore, exposure to sunlight, heat, and rain can gradually degrade the FASTag. With prolonged use, both the internal chip and the adhesive layer weaken, leading to scanning difficulties at toll plazas.
When Should You Replace Your FASTag?
If you are experiencing significant difficulties at toll plazas due to a FASTag issue, you should consider replacing it. According to the NHAI, if a FASTag is more than five years old or you are experiencing recurring scanning issues, it is advisable to replace the device.
