Bullet Train India: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has achieved another significant milestone. Excavation of the project’s third mountain tunnel in Palghar district, Maharashtra, has been completed. This tunnel is located in Ambesari village, Dahanu tehsil, Palghar district. With the successful completion of the tunnel, work on one of the most challenging sections of the bullet train project is progressing rapidly.
According to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the tunnel is 417 meters long and 14.4 meters wide. It was designed to accommodate both the up and down lines of the bullet train corridor. The tunnel was excavated using drilling and blasting techniques from both sides.
The MT-07 tunnel is 417 meters long.
The recently completed MT-07 mountain tunnel, carrying the two tracks of the bullet train corridor, is 417 meters long and 14.4 meters wide. The tunnel was excavated using controlled drilling and blasting from both sides. Advanced engineering and safety protocols were followed during construction. This success builds on earlier achievements in the Maharashtra section of the project.
The MT-05 and MT-06 were manufactured in January and February
The first 1.5-kilometer-long mountain tunnel (MT-05) was completed on January 2, 2026, near Safale in Palghar district. This achievement marked the first successful mountain tunneling project in Maharashtra. This was followed by the construction of the second tunnel (MT-06) on February 3, 2026, using the New Austrian Tunneling Method to complete a 454-meter-long tunnel. Thus, two successful constructions were completed in Palghar district within a span of approximately one month.
A total of 7 mountain tunnels are to be built in Maharashtra
Of the seven mountain tunnels under construction in Maharashtra, excavation work has been completed in MT-05, MT-06, and MT-07. Excavation work in MT-08 (350 meters) was completed on October 5, 2023. Excavation work in MT-03 is more than 80 percent complete, MT-04 has reached approximately 60 percent, while work is continuing on MT-01 and MT-02. Of the total eight mountain tunnels of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project, seven are in Palghar district of Maharashtra and one is in Valsad district of Gujarat, and work on that tunnel has already been completed.
Excavation of all three mountain tunnels between the Vapi and Boisar bullet train stations has been successfully completed. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor passes through an important industrial area between Boisar in Maharashtra and Vapi in Gujarat. Construction work there is progressing rapidly. The route between these two cities includes three mountain tunnels (MT-08, MT-07, and MT-06).
