Government has been working relentlessly to upbring farmers income. For that, there multiple schemes run by the Central Government of India. Due to lack of awareness, many farmers are still not aware about the government initiatives. To spread awareness about schemes and insurance, campaigns in the grassroots level have started.
Dr. Kirori Lal stated that to raise awareness among farmers about crop insurance, camps are being held at village panchayat headquarters across the state from October 1st to October 31st. Through these camps, policies are being distributed door-to-door to farmers. Department officials are also providing information about new agricultural techniques and government schemes. He also said that farmers who, for some reason, could not visit the camps to get the policy, can get their policy from their nearest agriculture supervisor or the local office of the insurance company.
How it can help farmers?
If a farmer’s crop fails to grow after sowing, they receive compensation of 25% of the insured amount. Furthermore, if the crop is damaged during sowing, harvesting, and even after harvesting due to hailstorms, unseasonal rains, cyclones, or other natural disasters, farmers are provided financial assistance under the scheme.
The Agriculture Minister stated that the combined efforts of the central and state governments are proving this scheme a boon for farmers. The scheme’s popularity is steadily increasing due to timely disbursement of insurance claims and widespread publicity. He added that receiving financial assistance makes it easier for farmers to support their families.
The Agriculture Minister also stated that in areas without electricity, farmers can irrigate their fields by installing solar pumps under the PM Kusum Yojana. The state government is providing up to 60% subsidy under this scheme.
PM Fasal Bima Yojana
Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers are required to pay a premium of 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for horticultural or commercial crops. This scheme is voluntary for all farmers starting in 2022. However, if a loanee farmer wishes to opt out of the scheme, they must submit a written application seven days before the deadline.
