In January 2026, bank holidays won’t just be on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays; there will also be closures for festivals and special events in various states. So, showing up at the bank without checking ahead could lead to some hassles.

When are banks closed in January 2026?

January 1, 2026 (Thursday): Banks will be closed in Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, and Shillong for New Year and Gaan-Ngai celebrations.

January 2, 2026 (Friday): Aizawl, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram will have a holiday for New Year festivities and Mannam Jayanti.

January 3, 2026 (Saturday): Banks in Lucknow will be closed for Hazrat Ali’s birthday.

January 4, 2026 (Sunday): It’s a weekly holiday, so banks will be closed nationwide.

January 10, 2026 (Saturday): Being the second Saturday of the month, all banks will be shut.

January 11, 2026 (Sunday): Another weekly holiday.

January 12, 2026 (Monday): Banks in Kolkata will be closed for Swami Vivekananda Jayanti.

January 14, 2026 (Wednesday): Makar Sankranti / Magh Bihu will see holidays in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Itanagar.

January 15, 2026 (Thursday): Banks will be closed in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada for Pongal / Uttarayan Punyakaal / Makar Sankranti.

January 16, 2026 (Friday): Thiruvalluvar Day will be a holiday in Chennai.

January 17, 2026 (Saturday): Banks will be closed in Chennai for Uzhavar Thirunal.

January 18, 2026 (Sunday): It’s a weekly holiday.

January 23, 2026 (Friday): It’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti, Saraswati Puja, and Basant Panchami, so banks will be closed in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata.

January 24, 2026 (Saturday): It’s the fourth Saturday of the month, meaning all banks are closed.

January 25, 2026 (Sunday): Time for the weekly holiday.

January 26, 2026 (Monday): It’s Republic Day, and banks will be closed in most cities nationwide.

Even though bank branches are shut, UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and ATM services will still be up and running as usual. Make sure to wrap up any important banking tasks before the holidays to steer clear of any issues in the new year.
