Avoid these items on your train journey, you’ll be fined or imprisoned

Indian Railways Rules: The Indian Railways, the world’s fourth-largest rail network, connects millions of people to different parts of the country every day. To ensure passenger safety and convenience, the Railways enforces numerous rules and guidelines, which every passenger must follow.

These items should never be allowed on trains

According to the Railway Act, passengers are prohibited from carrying items that pose a safety risk. These include stoves, gas cylinders, firecrackers, flammable chemicals, acids, explosives, grease, cigarettes, and raw or wet leather. These items increase the risk of fire or accidents. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) maintains strict inspection and monitoring of such items.

Passengers often think that carrying fruit on trains is completely safe, but railway rules set certain limits. Carrying dry coconut along with fruits on trains is prohibited. The outer fibrous part of dry coconut is highly flammable and can cause a fire.

Violations will result in imprisonment and fines

If a passenger is caught carrying prohibited items, strict action can be taken against them. Under Section 164 of the Railway Act, such passengers face a fine of ₹1,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both. Furthermore, any losses incurred by the Railways can be recovered from the accused.

Traveling under the influence of alcohol is a crime. According to railway rules, traveling on a train while under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicant is a crime. If a passenger is caught doing so, their ticket will be cancelled and they could be punished with up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of ₹500, or both. These rules are designed to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.

Permission to Carry Cylinders

Generally, carrying gas cylinders on trains is prohibited. However, if a passenger requires an oxygen cylinder for a medical emergency, this may be permitted under special circumstances. The passenger must obtain prior permission from the relevant railway authorities. Indian Railways itself provides oxygen during medical emergencies.
