How will the coverage of the Ayushman Bharat scheme change?
The central government plans to add insurance cover of ₹5 lakh to the existing coverage of ₹5 lakh. This additional cover will be available to senior family members above the age of 70. If an elderly family member is 70 years or older, they will receive a separate treatment benefit of ₹5 lakh. This will bring the total coverage for such families to ₹10 lakh.
What is the Ayushman Bharat Scheme?
The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is the country’s largest health insurance scheme, launched to protect economically vulnerable families from the cost of treatment for critical illnesses. Eligible families receive cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh annually through this scheme. Many families who cannot afford expensive treatments can easily access even major and complex treatments under this scheme.
Who is eligible for this scheme?
This scheme is primarily for vulnerable and low-income families. This includes landless labourers, domestic helpers, daily wage labourers, sanitation workers, and families with limited income. A family includes parents, grandparents, spouses, children, and all dependents. Senior citizens aged 70 years or older are eligible for additional coverage under this scheme.

Why is it important to expand coverage?
The burden of diseases in the country is continuously increasing, and the cost of hospital treatment is becoming increasingly unaffordable for ordinary families. In such a scenario, the Ayushman Bharat scheme is proving to be a life-saving shield for many families. Increasing coverage to ₹10 lakh will provide significant relief to older adults in the treatment of serious illnesses and ease the financial pressure on poor families.
