We have the sixth-generation Honda City, scheduled to launch in 2028. But this won’t be just a new model, but the most dramatic design overhaul in Honda City history. Honda 0 Series

First, let’s explain what the 0 Series sedan concept is all about. The production version of the electric 0 Series sedan will be the top of Honda’s global EV portfolio, but it previews a new design language that is expected to influence all Honda sedans—including India’s most recognizable Honda City. Imagine a car with a sportier front end, a more athletic stance, and a striking front quarter glass. Yes, it’s inspired by the iconic Lamborghini Countach! However, unlike the 0 Series concept, the ‘pop-up’ headlamps won’t be in the production version due to modern safety norms.

New Platform PF2

Now let’s talk about the foundation on which this new City will be built. Insiders say the next-generation City will shift to Honda’s new PF2 modular architecture. This platform is designed for small and midsize cars and SUVs, and most importantly, it’s ready for hybridization. The midsize hybrid platform recently revealed by Honda is believed to be the PF2. This platform is approximately 90 kg lighter than Honda’s current hybrid base, a significant weight saving that will increase efficiency and maintain the “joy of driving” that Honda wants to maintain in its future models. Vehicles produced under PF2 will share more than 60 percent of their components, which will help streamline production and keep costs competitive.

Hybrid Technology

The current City e:HEV is praised for its efficiency but also criticized for its steep pricing. The next-generation model is expected to address this issue. Thanks to localization and parts optimization, Honda will finally be able to offer a hybrid City that will be priced within the reach of a wider audience. This is an important step ahead of the stricter CAFE 3 norms, which come into effect in 2027. The Honda City is expected to offer both petrol and hybrid powertrains. Given high fuel prices, stricter CAFE standards, and growing hybrid demand, Honda’s new move comes at an opportune time.

History

Launched in 1998, the City is Honda’s longest-running nameplate in India. In its first three generations, the City dramatically transformed itself each time, whether through radical design, class-leading efficiency, or performance. In comparison, the fourth and fifth generations took a more conservative approach, focusing on space, efficiency, and bulletproof reliability. The 1.5 i-VTEC is still considered the gold standard for naturally aspirated engines, but with turbocharged TSI rivals from Skoda and Volkswagen, and the Verna’s tech-rich cabin, competition has become fiercer than ever. Honda knows the City needs a shake-up—and the next-generation model aims to do just that.
