87% of bookings are online

IRCTC has seen a tremendous surge in ticket bookings in recent times. Due to simplified procedures, most passengers now prefer to book train tickets online through IRCTC rather than through PRS counters at railway stations.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on December 3, 2025, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav confirmed this significant change. He stated that e-ticketing now accounts for over 87% of total reserved tickets booked on Indian Railways. He also acknowledged that some complaints regarding failed transactions, delayed refunds, and booking errors are being regularly monitored for faster resolution.

The Technical Secret to Faster Booking

The Union Minister explained that the IRCTC website and mobile apps operate on Application Programming Interface (API)-based technology. This technology requires minimal text-based data exchange between the user’s device and the IRCTC server.

This ensures efficient performance for ticket booking even in rural areas with low bandwidth. Furthermore, IRCTC has implemented advanced Content Delivery Network (CDN) solutions, a global network of servers, to deliver static content to users more quickly and reliably. Capacity enhancement and technological upgradation are continuous processes on Indian Railways, depending on the availability of resources and techno-economic feasibility.
