The Indian cricket team selectors named the squad for the T20 series against South Africa on Wednesday. Suryakumar Yadav was named captain of the team, while Shubman Gill was named vice-captain. Shortly after this announcement, fast bowler Mohit Sharma announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Mohit Sharma had been trying to make a comeback by performing in the IPL. He played a key role in helping the Gujarat Titans reach the title match in 2023. However, the selectors did not give him a chance even after this. With this decision, Mohit Sharma’s nearly 14-year career came to an end. He announced this on social media on Wednesday.
Mohit wrote, “I wholeheartedly announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing less than a blessing. A big thank you to the Haryana Cricket Association for being the backbone of my career. A big thank you to Anirudh Sir, whose constant guidance and faith in me paved my path in a way that cannot be expressed in words. Thank you to the BCCI, my coaches, my teammates, IPL franchise.”

Mohit Sharma made his international debut in 2013. He took 31 wickets in 26 ODIs and 6 wickets in 8 T20Is. In addition, Mohit has taken 127 wickets in 44 first-class matches at an average of 24.55, while he has 86 wickets in 78 List A matches. Mohit Sharma was part of the Indian team that reached the semi-finals of the Men’s ODI World Cup. He played for Haryana in the domestic circuit.
This right-handed pacer often troubled the opposition batsmen with his disciplined bowling and cutters, slower balls and slow bouncers in the death overs. He took 134 wickets in 120 matches of his IPL career. Mohit Sharma has represented Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals. He represented Chennai Super Kings in the first 3 IPL seasons. Mohit, who took 20 wickets in his first season, took 27 wickets for Gujarat Titans in 2023.
