Bedroll Facility in Sleeper: Good news for railway passengers. Until now, passengers in AC coaches on trains could enjoy a pillow, blanket, and sheet. But guess what? Now, those same perks are coming to sleeper class passengers too! This is a big deal for those who won’t have to lug around their own bedroll anymore. The Railways will also be offering clean and ready-to-use bedrolls in sleeper class.
This service will operate on an on-demand basis, so passengers can pay to borrow a bedsheet, pillow, or even a full bedroll set. This move by the Railways is buzzing on social media, as it’s set to make sleeper class travel way more comfy than it used to be. Let’s break down how much passengers will need to shell out for this amenity in sleeper coaches.
When can you expect this service to kick in?
Bedrolls that were once exclusive to AC coaches are now making their way to sleeper coaches too. This initiative is starting in South India. The Chennai division of Southern Railway has announced that on-demand bedrolls for sleeper class passengers will be available on select trains starting January 1, 2026. These bedrolls will be fully sanitized and ready for use. Passengers will just need to request them and pay a set fee to get them.
The Railways rolled out this service as a pilot project under the NINFRIS scheme in 2023-24. Passengers gave it a thumbs up back then, which led the Railways to make it a permanent offering. Southern Railways is confident that this facility will enhance the comfort of sleeper class passengers, especially during overnight journeys.
Why was there a need for change?
Many passengers traveling in sleeper coaches cannot afford the AC fare or are forced to travel in sleeper coaches due to an unexpected travel need. In such situations, the lack of sheets and pillows during the cold season created problems. Most passengers carried their own bedrolls, making their luggage heavy and the journey somewhat uncomfortable. Now, with the Railways’ new facility, passengers can easily purchase blankets, sheets, and pillows for a fee. This will not only keep their luggage lighter but also increase their comfort during the journey.
What will the charge be?
Passengers using this service will need to pay a fee for the bedroll. The Railways has set the price low enough so that any passenger can easily use it if they want. You can opt for just the bedsheet, just the pillow, or the whole set. To get this, just ask the train staff, and they will hand you a packed, clean bedroll. As for the prices, a bedsheet costs Rs. 20, a pillow with a cover is Rs. 30, and if you want both a bedsheet and a pillow with a cover, it will be Rs. 50.
