When riding on long-haul trains, many people are aware of the rules associated with them. Policies regarding cancelled bookings vary depending on how long you have to wait to cancel your reservation prior to departure. If you cancel your reservation within four to 48 hours of your scheduled departure time, you’ll be entitled to receive a partial refund on the price of your ticket. However, do you know what time period provides you the ability to receive a full refund?

Trains tend to experience an increase in delays during the winter months as a result of heavy fog. In situations where trains are cancelled as a result of these heavy fogs, you’re going to be entitled to a full refund of your ticket purchase price. In cases of over three hours of delay and not boarding due to that delay, you’ll also be entitled to a full refund.

Again, if the train route is changed for any reason, and due to this you miss a stop, then you can also apply for a full refund. In this case, you have to file a TDR within 30 minutes of the train’s departure. If the train is late, you have to file a TDR within 72 hours and if the train is canceled, you have to file a TDR within 3 hours.

If you travel on an AC ticket and the AC in the compartment is not working, then you can apply for a refund. The difference in the price of AC and non-AC tickets can be found by filing a TDR. Usually, the refund is made within 7 to 15 days after filing a TDR.

About Cancellation Fee-

If the ticket is cancelled 48 hours before the train departure, then in case of AC Chair Car or AC 3 Tier, 180 Rs and GST is deducted as cancellation fee. For AC First Class or AC 2 Tier, 240 Rs and GST is deducted from the ticket price. If the ticket is cancelled in Sleeper Class, a charge of 120 RS is deducted. If the ticket is cancelled in Second Class, a cancellation fee of 60 Rs is charged.

  • If the ticket is cancelled between 48 hours and 12 hours before the train departure, then 25 percent of the ticket price is deducted.
  • If the ticket is cancelled between 12 hours and 4 hours before the train departure, then 50 percent of the ticket will be deducted as cancellation fee.
  • If the ticket is cancelled 4 hours before the train departure, then no refund is available.
