The Indian team, coached by Gautam Gambhir, suffered a 0-2 clean sweep at the hands of South Africa in the two-match Test series. South Africa defeated India by a massive 408 runs in Guwahati on Wednesday.
This was India’s biggest defeat by a margin of runs in the Test format. Meanwhile, South Africa completed a clean sweep of India’s home Test series for the first time in 25 years. The Indian team has been facing criticism for some time due to its poor performance at home. Before the South Africa series, India suffered a 0-3 clean sweep at home against New Zealand. However, India’s path to the World Test Championship final has become increasingly difficult after their defeat against South Africa.
Fans in Guwahati were distraught over India’s defeat. They were most upset with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Following India’s defeat at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, fans chanted “Gautam Gambhir Hai Hai” in front of the head coach. The Indian head coach was booed heavily.
Following India’s crushing defeat in Guwahati, Gautam Gambhir said in a press conference that the BCCI would decide his future. Gambhir said that Indian cricket is important, not him. Under Gautam Gambhir, the Indian team’s head coach, India has lost five of the last seven home Tests and 10 of the 18 matches played so far.
