Incredible fielding effort by Aiden Markram in the Guwahati Test at the Barsapara Stadium during IND vs SA 2nd Test match. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) retained him ahead of IPL 2026 season.

Aiden Markram’s effort in history book

On Monday (November 24), the third day of the second and final Test against India being played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, South Africa’s star batsman Aiden Markram created history with his brilliant fielding. Markram took a total of 5 catches in India’s first innings and equaled the world record of taking the most catches in an innings in Test cricket. Till now only 16 players have achieved this feat in Test history and Markram is only the second player from South Africa to achieve this feat. Before him, former legendary batsman Graeme Smith had made this record against Australia in Perth in 2012.

During the Indian innings, when Marco Jansen was consistently taking wickets with short-pitched deliveries, Markram stood alert in the field. He made India’s situation even worse by taking brilliant catches of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Reddy’s catch, in particular, was remarkable. Markram took a flying catch to the right, leaving the spectators stunned.

Talking about the match, South Africa’s first innings ended at a mammoth score of 489 runs. In response, India had a good start with KL Rahul and Jaiswal adding 65 runs for the first wicket. But as soon as Marco Jansen started his bouncer strategy, the Indian batsmen faltered and the score went from 95/1 to 122/7 in no time. Lower down the order, Washington Sundar (48 runs) held on for some time and took the team past 200, but Jansen took a total of 6 wickets and bundled out India for 201.

After taking a 288-run lead in the first innings, South Africa finished the third day’s play at 26 for no loss. Ryan Rickelton remained unbeaten on 13 and Aiden Markram on 12, taking their total lead to 314 runs and the match appears to be firmly in their control.
