Team India captain Shubman Gill retired hurt after playing just three balls on the second day of the Test match against South Africa. Gill came in to bat at number four after Washington Sundar was dismissed. After defending two balls against Simon Harmer, Shubman hit a powerful four off the third ball, but then suffered a neck strain.

Troubled by the pain, Gill decided to retire. Team India’s physio and captain Gill himself were reluctant to take any risks, so they decided to return. When Shubman Gill returned to the pavilion, India’s score was 79 for 2. After Shubman Gill retired hurt, Rishabh Pant came on to bat. After recovering from an injury sustained during the England tour, Shubman was batting for Team India for the first time in a Test.
Team India has made a steady start to the Test match against South Africa being played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Although the Indian team lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for just 18 runs on the first day of play, Washington Sundar, who came in as night watchman alongside KL Rahul, batted well and held the wicket together on the first day. Sundar and Rahul shared a 57-run opening partnership in 164 balls. Sundar was dismissed for 29.
Lunch break
India scored 138 runs for four wickets in the first innings till the lunch break. India lost the wickets of Washington Sundar, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant in the first session on the second day. The matter of concern for India is that captain Shubman Gill got injured due to which he had to leave the field. On the second day, KL Rahul and Washington took the team’s innings forward and there was a partnership of 57 runs between them for the second wicket. This partnership ended with the dismissal of Washington.
Gill came to the crease after Washington’s dismissal. As soon as he came on the field, he opened his account with a four, but he started having pain in his neck. After this, the physio came on the field and Gill went out of the field with him.
