Which tournament we are talking about
At its latest board meeting in Dubai on Friday, November 7, the global cricket body confirmed that six teams each from the men’s and women’s categories will compete at the Games for the first time since the Paris Olympics in 1900. The initial idea of only the top six teams based on the ICC T20I rankings has been scrapped. The system will now be based on the top team from each region/continent, with the sixth team entering via a global qualifier.
An ICC official stated that discussions have taken place regarding team participation, and it has been decided that the top-ranked team from each region/continent will participate, while the sixth team will come from the global qualifier. The ICC will share details soon, but the roadmap is almost finalized. This arrangement means that the top team from each region/continent will be among the top five teams.
Why Pakistan can be dropped
This simply means that based on the current rankings, India will qualify from Asia, Australia from Oceania, England from Europe, South Africa from Africa, and it will be interesting to see if the USA, given their hosting duties, qualifies from the Americas or if the West Indies will take that spot. Details of the Global Qualifiers are likely to be shared by the global cricket body soon. There’s also a strong possibility that the match between India and Pakistan will not take place in LA28 , as details of the Global Qualifiers are still unknown.
In a detailed statement issued after the meeting, the ICC highlighted the success of women’s cricket and also provided an update on the LA28 Games. The media release stated that the ICC reviewed the ICC’s ongoing discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28), as cricket continues to establish itself in the global multisport landscape. LA28 will feature six teams each in both the men’s and women’s T20 events. A total of 28 matches will be played, beginning on 12 July 2028.
