Shreyas Iyer will remain in Sydney for further evaluation and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly. “Shreyas Iyer sustained a serious abdominal injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025, resulting in a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified and the internal bleeding was stopped immediately following a minor operation. He has been given appropriate medical treatment,” the BCCI wrote in a release.
Iyer is now stable
His condition is now stable and he is recovering well. The BCCI medical team, along with experts from Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery and he has been discharged from the hospital today. The BCCI expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kouroush Haghighi and his team in Sydney, as well as Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, who ensured Shreyas received the best possible treatment for his injury. Shreyas will remain in Sydney for further evaluation and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly.
It’s worth noting that Iyer was appointed vice-captain of Team India during the three-match ODI series against Australia. Reports suggest that this injury could keep him out of cricket for a long time. Consequently, he is also considered out of the running for the 2026 T20 World Cup. It is expected that he will now return directly to the IPL.
