OTT Ban: Why was it that the Indian government banned 25 over-the-top (OTT) apps, including ULLU TV, Desiflix, and ALTT? Today, July 25, the Indian government took action against over-the-top (OTT) apps that display offensive ads and pornographic material. We explain why 25 apps, including ULLU, ALTT, Netflix, and Big Shots, have been banned.
The Indian government has taken a strong stance against the proliferation of pornographic content and offensive ads on internet platforms by banning 25 OTT platforms. As to a Ministry of Information and Broadcasting inquiry, these sites were continuously displaying ads and shows that were illegal in India.
Many OTT applications, including ULLU, ALTT, Desiflix, and Big Shots, among others, were found to be openly displaying sexual content and offensive ads, according to the inquiry. These apps’ objectionable promos and thumbnails, which viewers of all ages could easily view, were in addition to their pornographic content. A lot of people, social organizations, and parents were also complaining about this kind of news.
Websites and apps will be blocked
Given the gravity of the situation, the Ministry has formally announced that all of these platforms will be prohibited, and Internet service providers (ISPs) have been directed to block these websites and applications immediately.

The IT Act of 2000’s Sections 67 and 67A:
Posting or showing explicit or offensive content online is prohibited by this law. The offenders may face jail time, a fine, or both under this clause.
The Indian Justice Code 2023, Section 294:
This law, which allows for legal action against people who promote obscenity in public, was put into place to stop obscene behaviors, words, or deeds in public.
Misrepresentation of Women Act of 1986, Section 4:
This rule forbids displaying women in an offensive way or including disparaging remarks about them, and it stipulates severe penalties for those who break it.
Let us be clear: the government has stated that while digital media freedom of speech is important, it cannot tolerate immorality, obscenity, or social norm violations in the name of this freedom. This ruling has also said that similar content will be watched going forward and that suitable action will be taken.
