Automakers in the country and abroad are making Hybrid Vehicles offering a mixture of conventional combustion engine (ICE) and electric power. This technology has seen significant progress due to its environmental benefits and improved fuel efficiency. In the hybrid vehicle segment, Toyota has introduced its popular SUV Fortuner with MHEV technology. However, it is currently available only in the South African market.
What is special in Toyota Fortuner MHEV?
The Toyota Fortuner MHEV is a mild-hybrid version of the popular SUV, which shares its mild-hybrid technology with the HiLux MHEV. It was unveiled late last year. After the launch in South Africa, this hybrid SUV is expected to go on sale in other markets in the coming months.
Engine and Performance
The South African-spec Fortuner MHEV is very similar to the Fortuner Legend sold in India, offering a wide range of exterior paint options. Under the hood, this SUV has a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This hybrid engine produces 16hp and 42Nm of torque, giving a total of 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Toyota claims that the Fortuner MHEV is 5 percent more fuel-efficient than the standard Fortuner 2.8 diesel due to its hybrid technology.
Features
Apart from the mild-hybrid system, the Fortuner MHEV also features the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite, 360-degree camera and some minor interior cosmetic changes. The SUV is available in both 2WD and 4WD variants with a 6-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
While the Fortuner MHEV and HiLux MHEV are being introduced internationally, India sticks to the regular Fortuner and HiLux models. Toyota vehicles in India include petrol, petrol-hybrid, petrol-CNG and diesel-powered vehicles.
