Train Ticket Prices: Indian Railways has provided significant relief to passengers. As a New Year’s gift, Indian Railways will reduce the cost of travel on 17 trains, effective January 1st. Indian Railways is reclassifying certain trains by removing their ‘superfast’ status. Consequently, passengers will no longer be required to pay the ‘superfast surcharge’ when booking tickets, which will allow them to save between ₹30 and ₹75 on their travel costs. This decision by Indian Railways will result in savings for passengers. In this article, we explore the superfast surcharge and its impact on these specific trains.
How much is the superfast surcharge?
Indian Railways is reclassifying trains currently in the ‘superfast’ category to the ‘ordinary’ (standard) category. This means that, in addition to the base fare, no extra charges—known as ‘superfast surcharges’—will apply. The amount of this surcharge varies by class: it is ₹30 for Sleeper Class, ₹45 for AC Chair Car, 3AC, 3AC Economy, and 2AC, and ₹75 for First AC and Executive Class. With the removal of the ‘superfast’ status from these trains, passengers will be exempt from this charge, leading to direct savings on their travel expenses.
