RBI Scheme: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a new plan to aid bank customers, offering compensation of up to Rs 3.3 million. The RBI Ombudsman Scheme 2026 aims to provide customers with quick, unbiased, and cost-free solutions for addressing complaints related to regulated entities.
Starting from July 1, 2026, this scheme caters to consumer grievances linked to banks, specific National Financial Institutions (NBFCs), non-bank prepaid payment instrument issuers, credit information companies, etc. In cases where complainants suffer subsequent loss, the RBI Ombudsman Scheme can grant compensation of up to Rs 33 lakh.
Who is eligible to lodge complaints?
Individuals dissatisfied with responses from banks or other regulated bodies regarding their complaints can seek assistance from the RBI through the Reserve Bank of India Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS), 2026, a no-cost conflict resolution mechanism.
What compensation is available?
Compensation of up to Rs 33 lakh can be granted under this initiative. As per the RBI’s official website, there is no ceiling on the sum that can be presented to the RBI Ombudsman for resolution or judgment. Nonetheless, the RBI Ombudsman can provide compensation up to Rs 30 lakh for any indirect losses incurred by the complainant. Additionally, compensation of up to Rs 3 lakh can be awarded for time loss, expenses, distress, mental anguish, etc., experienced by the complainant.
Who is the RBI Ombudsman?
The RBI Ombudsman is a designated officer appointed by the Reserve Bank of India to investigate and settle complaints concerning service deficiencies by customers of regulated entities. Essential details about the complainant such as name, contact number, email address, complete mailing address, as well as comprehensive information regarding the individual against whom the complaint is lodged, including the complaint date or a copy of the complaint, and account, card, loan, and transaction specifics related to the complaint, are mandatory.
Nowadays, almost everyone uses banking services. Customers often face issues like incorrect charges, delayed payments, account errors, or other problems. The RBI Ombudsman Scheme 2026 provides customers with an opportunity to seek justice in such cases without any additional cost. If your complaint is not heard at the bank level, this RBI system can prove to be an important option for protecting your rights.
