Ration Card eKYC Deadline: Important news has emerged for ration card holders. The central government has implemented a new rule regarding ration cards; failure to comply will result in the cancellation of the card. The government has mandated eKYC for ration cards. To clean up the Public Distribution System (PDS) database, the government will temporarily block over 1.58 crore inactive ration cards.

According to media reports, the government will temporarily suspend ration supplies for cardholders who have not collected food grains during the six-month period from April to September 2026, starting in October 2026. However, the government has granted a three-month grace period for completing eKYC and field verification.

Currently, the central government provides free and subsidised rations to approximately 80 crore poor and middle-class ration card holders across the country. Consequently, this government decision may cause anxiety among the public. Those who have not yet completed their eKYC should get verified as soon as possible to ensure uninterrupted ration supplies.

The government states that the rule requiring electronic KYC (eKYC) every five years has been introduced to bring transparency to the ration card system. The objective is to curb fraud and the use of duplicate cards, ensuring that free food grains reach genuine beneficiaries. It is worth noting that the Modi government has extended the scheme for providing free food grains under the Public Distribution System (PDS) until 2029.

Reactivating Ration Cards via eKYC
The names of holders of inactive ration cards will not be immediately or permanently removed from the PDS database. Officials clarified that, starting October 1, such ration cards will merely be blocked for a temporary period. Subsequently, cardholders will be given three months to prove their status as genuine and eligible beneficiaries to activate their cards. If cardholders complete the e-KYC and field verification for their ration cards during this period, their cards will be immediately reactivated.

The issued notification states that a ration card can now only be obtained upon attaining the age of 18. Individuals below this age will not be eligible to hold a ration card; only those who have turned 18 can avail themselves of ofion subsidies. For children under the age of five, Aadhaar details will be recorded, and e-KYC must be completed within one year of the child turning five.

This measure is necessary to update the database under the revised Targeted Public Distribution System order. The government maintains that it is essential to remove cards that are duplicates, registered in the names of deceased individuals, or held by ineligible individuals; cancelling fraudulent cards will prevent the wastage of government-supplied food grains and ensure that rations reach the needy in full.
