PoK Protest Firing: The situation has escalated dramatically after violent confrontations between security forces and demonstrators in Rawalakot, the area of Pakistan-held Kashmir. The tension heightened abruptly during a protest by residents. In a common pattern, Pakistani security forces resorted to gunfire against unarmed protesters, causing widespread fear in the vicinity. The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) reports that at least nine individuals have lost their lives in Rawalakot, although some sources suggest the toll could be as high as 17.
Local groups state that multiple casualties occurred during the incident. Consequently, the region is in a state of high tension, with a significant number of people taking to the streets in protest. In response to the shooting, additional security personnel have been dispatched to the area. While official figures on the casualties remain undisclosed, the event has intensified the already existing unrest in PoK.
JAAC published the names of the deceased
The JAAC, which is leading the demonstrations in Pakistan-held Kashmir, revealed a handwritten roster containing the names of those who lost their lives. The violence has further aggravated the situation, leading to the suspension of internet services in various parts of the region. Both the Pakistani government and military are resolute in quelling the protests, ongoing for the past month, through any necessary means. A total of 91 Kashmiris have lost their lives during the nearly two months of protests.

Reasons behind the protests in PoK
Since the start of June, residents of Pakistan-held Kashmir have been staging street protests. These demonstrations commenced just before the elections, and authorities have been striving to suppress them. Initially, clashes between local law enforcement and paramilitary units resulted in fatalities, including security personnel and protesters. The primary demands of the demonstrators include:
– Elimination of 12 reserved seats in the Legislative Assembly
– Provision of enhanced political representation for local inhabitants
– Release of detained leaders and activists
– Improved governance and access to essential services such as electricity and water
