Driving License at 16 in India: Many people believe that a driving license in India can only be applied for after turning 18. However, under current rules, it is also possible to apply for a driving license at age 16. With the government’s digital services expanding rapidly, teenagers can now complete the entire application process online, using a mobile phone or laptop, without repeated visits to the RTO.
This facility is designed to simplify and make the licensing process more transparent, while ensuring road safety through clearly defined rules.
Minimum Age Requirement for a Driving License
To apply for a driving license in India, the applicant must be at least 16 years old. Anyone under this age, including those aged 15, must wait until they meet the eligibility criteria. The rule is strict, and age verification is mandatory during the application process.
Which Vehicles Are Allowed at Age 16?
Licenses issued at age 16 are valid only for two-wheelers without gears. This means the vehicle must not have gears and its engine capacity should not exceed 50cc. Gear motorcycles and higher-powered cars are not permitted under this category.
In addition, parental or guardian consent is required for applicants under 18, and this approval must be submitted with the application.
How to Apply for a Driving License at 16 Online?
Applying for a driving license at 16 is a simple online process through the Sarathi Parivahan portal. After selecting driving license–related services, applicants must choose their state and the RTO where they wish to apply. The learner’s license application form is then filled out using a mobile number–based OTP verification.
Once the form opens, applicants must carefully enter their personal details. For 16-year-old applicants, the only available vehicle category will appear as “Motorcycle Without Gear.” This option must be selected before proceeding further.
Self-Declaration, Documents, and Photo Upload
After completing the form, applicants must provide a self-declaration and answer health and eligibility questions honestly. Once submitted, the portal will display the list of documents that need to be uploaded, including age proof, address proof, and parental consent.
The following steps are to upload documents, then upload a photograph and sign directly on the portal.
Slot Booking and Fee Payment
After document submission, applicants must book a slot for the learner’s license test. An available date can be selected online, and OTP verification is required to confirm the booking. Finally, the license fee must be paid through digital payment options such as UPI, debit card, or credit card.
Once payment is completed, a receipt will be generated. This receipt should be printed and carried to the RTO on the test day.
Important Things Applicants Should Remember
Authorities advise applicants to keep a printed copy of the payment receipt and the uploaded documents with them when appearing for the learner’s license test. Following all steps correctly ensures that the process remains smooth and hassle-free.
